2014 Star Party Details

I can't believe it has taken me this long to update the News section! My apologies. We have so much great stuff happening this year!

This will be our 6th annual Star Party - can you believe we've been doing this for six years? Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support!

This year's party will be held on August 28, 2014. Proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and CosmoQuest

Details: http://atlantastarparty.com/

Tickets: http://atlantastarparty.com/tickets/

The Speakers:

Nicole Gugliucci, Pamela Gay and Derek Demeter will be returning.  We'll have demonstrations and be using the planetarium more this year. It's really going to be awesome.

As always, we'll have telescopes set up outside so people can view. We also should be able to go into the big scope and look through that.

We also have a 'virtual' star party that will happen, where different astronomers from around the world will be connected via Google hangout and will show us what they are seeing through their scopes.

The Silent Auction:

We have a set of amazing items for the silent auction this year - handmade models, pieces of art, fun space and science-related toys, plus some local things like tickets to local theaters and football games. This year, we had more time and I got so many incredible donations!!

The auction is up here: http://www.32auctions.com/atlstarparty2014 and the detailed list of all items: http://www.32auctions.com/organizations/8976/auctions/16754?reset_filter=1

There will also be some items that are only available at the party!

The Bottom Line:

Last year, we raised over $4,000. We are hoping to beat that goal this year but we need your help! Spread the word about this wonderful event and bring your friends along! This year, we're offering discounted student tickets as well!

There's so much fun stuff planned! I Hope you can make it!

Thank you so much!

I've just finished writing a check to mail off to CosmoQuest for a grand total of $4100!

I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to everyone who helped, contributed, volunteered and attended the 2013 Star Party. It was a miserably hot day and we had a few minor mishaps (wasps in the observatory telescope? Really?!) but I think everyone had a wonderful time.

Check out our Photos page for a few of the photos that were taken! We'll be adding more soon!

I have so many people to thank for all their work and help!

Richard Williamon and the staff at the Emory Math & Science Department for hosting us at the gorgeous venue and helping out through the evening.

Our amazing astronomers - Phil Plait, Pamela Gay, Derek Demeter and Nicole Gugliucci who entertained and educated us as they always do.

A particular thank you to all our donors and bidders on our Silent Auction. It contributed to nearly half the money we raised! We'll definitely do that again next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to all our volunteers - I couldn't have done it without you!

Jason Caldwell, who was our MC for the evening and made sure we were on time and on track, even when I was distracted by all the shiny things!

Lisa Hammett, who made airport runs, picked up drinks, dropped off drinks, and generally ran around and got things done for me!

Irena Rowe, who managed the Silent Auction like a pro!

Miriam Austin and Bruce Press, who took fantastic photos for us.

Shaune Beatie, Alicia Vickery, Ryan Consell who helped manage the 'posed' photos.

Stephen King, Tanya Caldwell, Allie Carroll, Nicola Mazbar, Taylor Proctor and Kristy Gonzalez who helped set up, ran registration and pretty much did anything else that was needed.

Christian Walters, who handled all the A/V.

Tim Farley, who ran the Google+ Hangout and Virtual Star Party.

Trent Brusky, who created our fantastic Star Party Promo.

Aaron Mercer, who gave us our new logo and the beautiful posters and programs we used.

And to everyone who attended, thank you so much and we'll see you next year!!

A huge success!

The 5th Annual Atlanta Star Party is over! Thank you so much to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated and attended. I've got a long list of thank yous and some great photos below but first, the most important info. I'm still waiting for a few things to come in so I don't have an exact number, but it looks like we have collected nearly $4000 for CosmoQuest!

Photos, thank you's and more details soon, I promise!
